Today is a historic day. I don’t have to tell you that. We have our first female, first African American, first south east Asian vice president. We also watched as a the highly anticipated transition of power happened. Many are shouting it’s a brand new day! Many are excited for sweeping changes and for the world to get back to normal. But all is not new and shiny and fixed because of the new resident of the white house.
As a youth worker I try to lead with positive and hope. I keep optimism and faith at the front of my mind. As we go into this next realm of presidential leadership we must try to stay positive but be realistic. Know that the work is not done. We must continue to have the difficult conversations with young people about race, economics, politics and the climate. We must continue to encourage them to take a leadership role in changing the world around them. We must garner the momentum and enthusiasm associated with this new beginning and push it forward and beyond.
This week lets make sure we engage our young people in dialogue. Lets have them reflect on how far we have come and how far we must go. Lets have them make a plan, how will you (young person) impact your community? Where will you draw your inspiration to make change? How will you encourage unity and peace, social and environmental justice?
